This is the finished floor cloth (painted behind left over vinyl flooring) put in place in my kitchen. This is the kitchen floor cloth finished and in place in my kitchen to protect the work triangle area of the new hardwood flooring. Go here to see how I painted it & taped it. And another small one I painted.
http://mhprojects.blogspot.com/search/label/floor%20cloth%20taped that link shows you how I taped the vinyl. I used the back side of a left over piece of regular floor vinyl. I found the center and then cut out (using newspaper) 9"-12" squares and layed them on my floor to get the right 'scale' for the kitchen. Too large would dwarf the space and too small would look too busy. Then I cut out 3 of the squares and layed them across the vinyl to see how they met the sides. Once I knew this, then I could lay out the tile pattern on the vinyl (the back side is like a gray white) with pencil. Once I had that worked out, I painted the whole cloth in the white color I wanted (to match my trim) then taped off the parts that were not going to be black and painted.
Mary Ruth, The floorcloth is beautiful. I am thinking of using vinyl as well and I was wondering how yours was holding up. Do you have any problem with curling around the edges. Is there anything you would have done differently? Thanks Monique
Monique, Thanks for stopping by! I was away, sorry I didn't get back to you sooner!
If I had it to do over, I would have put a few more coats of paint rather than just one top coat. I did do two coats of Kiltz primer to help the paint adhere to the vinyl and that helped a lot. And I sealed it about 3 times real well, I would do 5 this time. I find that now it is showing wear spots, but I wash it every day and it gets a lot of wear being where the sink and stove work spaces are. It was meant to protect the hardwood flooring and it is doing that very well.
The type of vinyl I got is the new kind (not old kind) I got this from a new home that had this left over after an installation. The backside is white and kind of slightly spongy. It bends well and does not crack when you curl it. All the edges stay put and have a kind of curl downward which makes a great edge for this purpose! I have never had a prblem catching it as we walk.
The wear and tear actually look good on my mat now, just little specks of paint coming off. But it makes it seem like an old oil cloth. I am going to 'freshen it up one of these days and seal it again. I think the disintergration of the paint is due to my using bleach in the water when I clean it with a rag. Good luck with yours! And if you buy a piece of vinyl instead of 'a found' one, you can get the size you want that custom fits your project! And do not get the kind that has squares in the pattern, they end up showing through the other side after it lays for a while. I didn't mind that, but, it may interfere with your design!
